“Before +After: Home and Garden Photo Contest Rules

No purchase is necessary to enter or win. Times-World, LLC and its subsidiaries and affiliates (“Times-World” or “The Roanoke Times”) are providing this contest, which is powered by Upickem.

Eligibility:

Contest entrants (“entrants” or “you”) must be a legal U.S. resident 18 years of age or older or the age of legal majority in your state of primary residence at time of entry to be eligible for this contest. Parents or legal guardians may enter a performance of a minor (younger than eighteen (18) years of age as of August 1, 2011) in their care.  Entries in the contest may be chosen for inclusion in an upcoming publication of “Fall Spaces,” a special edition of HomesNow that is produced by The Roanoke Times and distributed in the Roanoke Metro area on Friday, September 16, 2011.  Also, one entry will be selected at random by The Roanoke Times as the winner of the contest and will receive a $100 gift card from Northwest Hardware store. Employees, shareholders, officers, directors, agents, and representatives of Times-World, or their respective parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, divisions, agents, representatives and promotional agencies, and their immediate family members (defined as parents, spouse, children, siblings, grandparents or grandchildren) and/or any person with whom they are domiciled are not eligible, and people who meet this definition cannot enter their project in the contest. This contest is void where prohibited by law.

How to Enter:

Contest beings Monday, August 1, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. Submit two photos, a “before” shot and an “after” shot, of a home or garden project you did (or had done) within the past 10 years.  One entry per person. Entries in the contest may be chosen for inclusion in an upcoming publication of “Fall Spaces,” a special edition of HomesNow that is produced by The Roanoke Times and distributed in the Roanoke Metro area.  Also, one entry will be selected at random by The Roanoke Times as the winner of the contest and will receive a $100 gift card from Northwest Hardware store. Upload and send the two photos via electronic delivery through the contest site at roanoke.com/contests, together with your full name, e-mail address,  telephone number(s) and a short description of project (50 words or fewer), to include the date of the project, the project scope, how the project was carried out and the result of the project.  Example: Kitchen renovation done in January 2011, to replace outdated appliances, cabinets and countertop.  Used products from local hardware store and sub-contractors to complete the job, along with “sweat equity” of homeowners! Bought energy efficient appliances.  Very pleased with end result.

Entries must be received by 11:59 a.m. on Monday, August 22. 

Submission Requirements:

The photos must be entirely your original work and must not contain material that

• violates or infringes another's rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement (including copyrighted music, lyrics, images, photos, artwork, script, or footage);
• disparages Times-World, or any other person or party affiliated with the promotion and administration of this Contest;
• depicts brand names, location signage, trademarks, or logos;
• is inappropriate, indecent, obscene, hateful, tortuous, defamatory, slanderous or libelous;
• promotes bigotry, racism, hatred or harm against any group or individual or promotes discrimination based on race, gender, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age; or
• is unlawful, in violation of or contrary to the laws or regulations in any jurisdiction where photos are created.

The Roanoke Times reserves the right to disqualify in their sole and absolute discretion any photos that violate the contest rules.

Selection of winners:

Once the entry period closes, a panel of experts (selected by The Roanoke Times) will review the entries and choose the entries that will be featured in Fall Spaces and the one random winner of the $100 Northwest Hardware gift card in the contest.  These winners will be published in Fall Spaces on Friday, September 16, 2011 and on the contest site Monday, September 19 at 10 a.m. Winners will be notified by telephone and/or email on or about Friday, September 16, 2011. The winners agree to be featured in The Roanoke Times’ Fall Spaces and on roanoke.com.

Prizes:

Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.

One Grand Prize winner will receive a Northwest Hardware gift card valued at $100. 

Grand prize winner and others will be featured in The Roanoke Times’ Fall Spaces publication on Friday, September 16.

All results posted are unofficial until winner(s) claim their prize from Times-World. Winners must claim their prizes no later than December 31, 2011. The failure to claim a prize by December 31, 2011 will result in forfeiture of the prize.

Additional Terms:

Entrants agree to abide by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of the contest commissioners, which are final on all matters pertaining to the contest.

By entering the contest, (i) you represent that you are the copyright owner of the photos, (ii) you grant to Times-World all rights necessary to use the photos in the contest, (iii) you grant to Times-World a worldwide, perpetual, fully-paid up, irrevocable license to edit, publish, republish, distribute and copy the photos and/or the edited photos an unlimited number of times in any print, electronic or other medium, (iv) you represent that you have obtained from anyone identified or depicted in the photos (or the parent or guardian of any child identified or depicted) all permission necessary to grant Times-World the foregoing license, and (v) you grant to Times-World the right to use and publish your name and state of residence online and in print, or any other media, in connection with the contest.

Times-World reserves the right to use any and all information related to the contest, including information on contestants obtained through the contest, for marketing purposes or any other purpose, unless prohibited by law.

Each winner, by acceptance of the prize, releases and agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless Upickem and Times-World, and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, officers, directors, employees, agents, shareholders, affiliates, suppliers, distributors, and advertising agencies from all liability, claims, or actions of any kind whatsoever for injuries, damages, liability or losses which may be sustained in connection with the contest or the receipt, ownership, or use of the prize.

Times-World and Upickem are not responsible for Internet crashes or slowdowns caused by network congestion, viruses, sabotage, satellite failures, phone line failures, electrical outages, natural disasters or acts of man or God.

Each winner is responsible for all federal, state and local taxes and will be required to complete an IRS form W-9. Times-World reserves the right to withhold prizes until completed form W-9 is received.

This contest is not intended for gambling. If it is determined that a contestant is using the contest for gambling purposes they will be disqualified and reported to authorities.
