“Drumstick Dash Memories” Contest Rules

No purchase is necessary to enter or win. Times-World, LLC and its subsidiaries and affiliates (“Times-World” or “The Roanoke Times”) are providing this contest, which is powered by Upickem.

Eligibility:

Contest entrants (“entrants” or “you”) must be a legal U.S. resident. Employees or contractors of The Roanoke Times, its respective parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising sponsors and promotional agencies, and the immediate family members (defined as a parent, spouse, children, siblings, grandparent, grandchildren, as well as any person with whom they are domiciled) of each are not eligible to participate in this contest. This contest is void where prohibited by law.

How to Enter:

One essay and one optional photo or illustration entry per person. To enter the contest, you must submit one essay of 400 words or less, describing your memory of participation in a past Drumstick Dash held by the Rescue Mission, and an optional original photo or illustration you have permission to use. Submit the essay and photo through the contest site at roanoke.com/contests, together with your full name, mailing address, e-mail address and telephone number(s).  Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2010. 

Submission Requirements:

The essay and image must be entirely your original work and must not contain material that

  • violates or infringes another's rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement (including copyrighted music, lyrics, images, photos, artwork, script, or footage);
  • disparages Times-World, or any other person or party affiliated with the promotion and administration of this contest;
  • depicts brand names, location signage, trademarks, or logos;
  • is inappropriate, indecent, obscene, hateful, tortuous, defamatory, slanderous or libelous;
  • promotes bigotry, racism, hatred or harm against any group or individual or promotes discrimination based on race, gender, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age; or
  • is unlawful, in violation of or contrary to the laws or regulations in any jurisdiction where photo is created.

The image must be an original photograph or illustration that you have permission to use.

The Roanoke Times reserves the right to disqualify in their sole and absolute discretion any essay, photo or illustration that violate the contest rules.

Selection of winners:

Voting will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, November 8, 2010 and end at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.  The top vote getter – plus an essay chosen by “Dash” of the Rescue Mission -- will be announced in The Roanoke Times starting Friday, November 19, 2010.  The two winning essays will be published in The Roanoke Times Sunday, November 21, 2010.

The winners must allow their essays/images to be published in The Roanoke Times and on roanoke.com and used for promotional purposes by The Roanoke Times and the Rescue Mission.

Ties will be decided by Times-World.

Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.

Additional Terms:

Entrants agree to abide by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of the contest commissioners, which are final on all matters pertaining to the contest.

By entering the contest, (i) you represent that you are the copyright owner of the photo, illustration and original author of the essay, (ii) you grant to Times-World all rights necessary to use the essay, photo and illustration in the contest, (iii) you grant to Times-World a worldwide, perpetual, fully-paid up, irrevocable license to edit, publish, republish, distribute and copy the essay, photo and illustration an unlimited number of times in any print, electronic or other medium, (iv) you represent that you have obtained from anyone identified or depicted in the photo or illustration (or the parent or guardian of any child identified or depicted) all permission necessary to grant Times-World the foregoing license, and (v) you grant to Times-World the right to use and publish your name and state of residence online and in print, or any other media, in connection with the contest.

Times-World reserves the right to use any and all information related to the contest, including information on contestants obtained through the contest, for marketing purposes or any other purpose, unless prohibited by law.

Each winner releases and agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless Upickem and Times-World, and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, officers, directors, employees, agents, shareholders, affiliates, suppliers, distributors, and advertising agencies from all liability, claims, or actions of any kind whatsoever for injuries, damages, liability or losses which may be sustained in connection with the contest.

Times-World and Upickem are not responsible for Internet crashes or slowdowns caused by network congestion, viruses, sabotage, satellite failures, phone line failures, electrical outages, natural disasters or acts of man or God.

This contest is not intended for gambling. If it is determined that a contestant is using the contest for gambling purposes they will be disqualified and reported to authorities.

Times-World reserves the right to change these contest rules at any time.
